Plan of Action for 2024
Plan of Action for 2024
"We are more fulfilled when we are
involved in something bigger than ourselves."
— John
Glenn
Note that I’m changing the language from
my previous posts in which I’ve tried to get aware from the unsuccessful trope
of “resolutions”. I’m always not entirely focusing on “goals” as they are
inevitably progress-oriented in a way that encourages self-optimization and has
too much of a capitalist-minded undercurrent.
(I’ll admit some embarrassment about the
content of goals that were set even just a year or two ago.)
1.
I’m going to shy away from
my long-time (10+ years?) dedication to submitting to lit mags at least once
per month. I upped it to twice a month at one point. This is because I want to
focus on the writing itself as well as platforming the work of other writers/poets.
a.
Since I’m writing on Substack on a semi-regular basis, you can find regular updates of my
self-publication there. I’m putting in the work without wasting too much time
on the shenanigans of the gamified submission system. I’ll continue to
periodically submit to the journals that I personally like, and the editors who
seem to like my work, and the editors who have been kind enough to support my
work for years. This takes far less time and effort than attempts to place
poems in journals with low acceptance rates and slow response times.
b.
This deemphasis on
publishing my own work feels important as I focus on stewardship of the arts.
If I’m overly focused on my personal writing career, I’m less likely to take
important risks to discuss information that might work against me. I’m not
getting up on the cross here. I’m simply saying that it’s not in the majority’s
best interest for me to indulge myself in [overly] focusing on publishing my
personal poetry.
2.
I need to continue to
prioritize my health. I still feel strange making that statement but if I want
to be around to do good work, well, I have to stick around. This is important
as I am not succeeding, overall, in my goal going into 2023 of entering 2024
with less chronic pain.
3.
Continue a strong daily
focus on my work with ONE ART and contributors.
4.
Continue to grow ONE ART’s
readership.
5.
Regular writing on Substack.
It’s a gift to myself to simply give myself the time and space to write.
a.
Grow subscriber base.
6.
Continue to make a strong
effort to spend more time reading physical books.
7.
Find more time to enjoy and
learn from podcasts and audiobooks.
